Fall '24 Class Offerings

  • Fall classes will be held on Mondays 9/23/24 - 11/11/24. Classes are held at East Olive Community Center, 2583 Green Rd, St Johns, MI 48879
  • This is NOT a drop-off program, children need to be accompanied by an adult and that adult is to stay in the building or on the grounds while the child is in class.

Registration

Our Registration is a tiered system:

  • Teachers are allowed to register online beginning 9/4.
  • Those making a significant volunteer commitment (details about this are listed in this post) are allowed to register at Volunteer Registration on 9/9. Registrations will take place at East Olive Community Center from 10-1. Please see the above linked post for all the details.
  • Open registration is 9/10 - 9/13 at 9pm.
  • We will still allow registrations after 9/13 with teacher permission. This allows our teachers to have time to properly prepare for their class and we want to make sure any last minute additions are communicated directly to them. The registration page will be very similar to this one in look and feel, and there will be links to register listed with each class.

Waitlist

  • If a class is full, please still register for it. You will have the option to be put on a waitlist.
  • Please do this so we are able to notify you if a spot opens up and to let us know how popular a class is so that we can try to offer it at a different time or keep on the schedule to run again in a future term.
  • Enrollment can be a flowing process, so please be patient!

Lunch Hour

  • Lunch will be held in the lunch room (room 110) from 12:00 - 1:00 pm.
  • The refrigerator and microwave in the kitchen are available for use by adults.
  • Kids are welcome to go outside or use the gym with their designated adult during the lunch hour. During bad weather, the gym can be used for extra space after the kids have finished eating their lunch in the lunch room, again accompanied by their designated adult.

Financial Assistance

  • Financial Assistance is available to those families experiencing economic hardship.

FAQ

  1. What if my child falls outside the age range but I would still like to register them? Age Ranges listed are recommendations, if you feel like your child would be a good fit for the class please reach out to the teacher (click their name and it links to their email) to get permission to join and email info@dicemichigan.org and request an override to complete registration. **Note: If you falsify your child's age to get around this requirement, we will unenroll you from classes and ask that you register again with correct information.
    • Volunteer registration note: If you need age exceptions for your child(ren)s first or second choice classes you MUST email the teacher BEFORE registration and bring proof with you (show us the email on your phone, print it out) so we are able to keep things moving. If you do not do this we may not be able to get you into that class as we will not have time to check any age exceptions with teachers at the event.
  2. Can my child’s therapist join them in class? We are supportive of accommodating everyone as much as we can. Please reach out to the teacher for each class to get permission (click their name and it links to their email). There are times when the additional therapy occurring during class is disruptive to the rest of the class so we want to be sure that the Teacher, Parent, and Therapist are in direct communication to ensure a smooth class for everyone involved.

Greek Mythology

Age: 13+

Class Description

Each week we'll read a few myths about a different Greek God or Goddess, and discuss them within the context of the culture and beliefs at the time. The goal here is fun, informal discussions that are interesting and informative without being too structured.

Markers, pencil crayons, blank paper, and coloring pictures of each week's mythology subject will be available for kids who want to draw or color while we talk (but no pressure for those who don't want to).

I'll provide a folder for each kid with some info sheets covering whatever we discuss that week, and for them to collect their drawings/colored pages of each God or Goddess.

PLEASE NOTE: This class is for teens only, as some of the subjects discussed have more adult themes (Greek deities were not known for their chastity or monogamy.) If you think your kid can't handle discussions that will likely touch on sexual references, you may not want them in this class. Obviously I plan to keep the discussions from focusing solely on the sexual aspects, or devolving into unnecessary smut, but some of these references are unavoidable.

Over the 8 weeks of class, we'll cover the following subjects:

  1. Intro to Greek mythology - a brief overview of the Greek pantheon and the types of spiritual practices and religious beliefs held in ancient Greece.
  2. Zeus and Hera
  3. Apollo and Artemis
  4. Aphrodite and Ares
  5. Hades, Persephone, and Demeter
  6. Athena and Hephaestus
  7. Hermes and Dionysus
  8. Poseidon and Gaia

Class Structure
