Students will explore different facets of every-day life in Early America, our country’s history and lore, and learn about the factors which contributed to its eventual separation from the British Empire. In-depth Picture Book StudyAge: 5-8 Time: 11:00 - 11:50 Class Fee: $16 Material Fee: $5 | Class Description In this class we will use picture books as a springboard to study the world around us! In each class I'll read the book, and then we will have a craft or activity and a lively conversation that relates to another subject such as geography, science, literacy, history, or social studies. This is meant to be an in-depth study that encouraged a deeper appreciation for literacy and the joy of learning through the exploration of picture books. Therefore, we will study a total of two picture books, four weeks on each book. Although it might seem repetitive to read the same book four times, this practice helps young children develop active listening and encourages critical thinking. This is to accommodate a variety of crafting supplies and 2 extra weeks added to the semester. | Class Description Let’s travel through American History using the beloved American Girl historical characters as our guides in doing time-period crafts and activities! While there are many different historical dolls, we will be focusing on: Kaya (1764), Felicity (1774), Josefina (1824), Kirsten (1854), Addy (1864), Samantha (1904), and Molly (1944). The first week of class will be an introduction to all the dolls and their time periods. We will also put together a timeline as well. The last week of class we will have a party! I am currently leaning towards a Felicity Colonial themed party. (More info to come later in the semester.) Students will use squares of colorful paper and transform them into animals and objects by using only folding techniques. No prior origami experience is necessary to join this class. ImprovAge: 9-12 Time: 3:00 - 3:50 Class Fee: $11 Material Fee: None | Class Description Improv is short for improvisation. It's the practice of making stuff up as we go. In this class, we'll use our bodies and minds to explore this art form using a variety of exercises that stretch our capabilities in often silly ways. Some activities will be physical, some will be thinky, and they'll all be creative. We'll develop our imagination, build comfort in using our bodies and ideas, collaborate, shape stories, learn that it's okay to make mistakes, and explore the possibilities of our minds. Feeling Felt-tastic!: Needle Felting 101Age: 9+ Time: 3:00 - 3:50 Class Fee: $21 Material Fee: $25, to include tools and extra wool for students to take home at the end of term | Class Description This crafty class is sure to entertain and inspire. Students will learn all about the science and magic of wool, with a focus on needle felting. Needle felting is a delightful (and downright addictive) craft full of opportunity, which engages the brain and helps calm the nervous system. Each class session will introduce new techniques and crafting prompts, including creating wire armatures and leaning wet-felting tricks. Students will receive their own dedicated set of needles and a work mat. Each person will work at their own speed on open-ended projects led by Ms. Audrey, as they sharpen their fine motor skills and unleash their creativity! Trailblazers: Amazing Women Who Shaped HistoryAge: 8-11 Time: 3:00 - 3:50 Class Fee: $11 Material Fee: $15 | Class Description This course will feature one famous woman per week, focusing on her role in shaping history. This class will involve some teacher led discussions along with fun hands on activities to enhance learning. We will learn about athletes, artists, scientists, innovators and others. While we definitely won't be sitting still the whole time, your child will get the most out of this class if they are able to sit and listen for 5-10 minute stretches.
